New York City expected to legalize ADUs in much of the city

New York City is expected to legalize ADUs throughout much of the city this month.
One planning expert estimates the city will create 20,000 secondary units as result of this proposed housing reform. Thousands of backyard tiny homes and converted garages, basements, and attics are anticipated to be constructed.
Two city-council subcommittees recently agreed to a modified version of Mayor Eric Adams’ “City of Yes” housing package plan that includes the ADU provision. The plan is expected to pass the full council this month.
New York follows cities including Los Angeles and Seattle that approved ADUs with the aim of creating more affordable housing. ADU construction has surged in California, where they made up nearly 20% of new homes built last year.
