DOE pushes for industry standards on germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) products

Some developers and sellers don’t understand how to measure, accurately report GUV performance.

Germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) products can play a critical role in meeting advanced indoor air quality standards using less energy, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The DOE’s second round of CALiPER test results for GUV products also demonstrate the important need for further education and industry standards. The results suggest that some product developers and sellers may not understand how to measure and accurately report GUV product performance.

“To address this issue, the industry could prioritize development of a standard set of recommended testing for each product type, with a standard set of associated performance data that should be reported for each product,” reads a DOE news release. “In one such effort, the ANSI C137.12 working group has begun drafting a new standard that is partly aimed at presenting consistent and accurate information regarding GUV products.”

There is more work needed to address testing limitations and improve test lab infrastructure and capabilities to support the accurate testing of GUV products, the agency says.
