Panorama High School is the newest addition to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Due to its location in a compact metropolitan area, the 250,460-sf school is actually 50-70% smaller than a typical high school campus. The design team from Santa Monica-based WWCOT worked around these size constraints, designing the school in the style of a college or university. Classrooms are held in a four-story building and several athletic courts (basketball, tennis, handball) are on top of the parking garage and cafeteria. Despite the size of the campus, the high school still has the capacity to hold 2,400 students in grades 9 through 12, which will help ease the crowding of existing LAUSD schools. Other team members: Bernards Brothers, San Fernando, Calif., general contractor; Hengstler/TMAD, Anaheim, Calif., mechanical and plumbing; and Donald F. Dickerson Associates, Van Nuys, Calif., electrical.
