Bethlehem, Pa., receives preservation award for Bethlehem Steel building renovation
Bethlehem, Pa., is a recipient of a 2013 award by Preservation Pennsylvania for a renovation of the oldest building on the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. site. The award, for an industrial project based on the building’s previous use, honors the rehab work that turned an 1863 Bethlehem Steel Corp. building into a city visitor’s center.
The city spent $5.5 million from a special Bethlehem Steel site redevelopment fundto renovate the former stock house. The renovated building also includes offices for an arts group and a major public bathroom facility that will serve concerts and other events at the site.
Boyle Construction renovated the structure to stringent historical standards, the company said in a press release. All exterior windows and doors were recreated from 1909 Bethlehem Steel drawings, and only historically appropriate materials were used, the company said.
