Renovation of historic Winchester, Va., buildings uncovers Civil War cannonball, bullets
The renovation of a set of historic downtown Winchester, Va., buildings led to the discovery of several historic artifacts including a Civil War cannonball and bullets, a variety of old baseball cards, and a 1940s-era newspaper embedded in the drywall. The buildings, constructed in 1840, were the home of The Winchester Star newspaper for 35 years. The reconstruction project created two 1,200 sf offices and nine apartments ranging from 561 sf to 1,206 sf.
The project cost $1.25 million, and developer OakCrest Companies earned tax credits worth about $500,000.
“As we continue to change and move in different living patterns, I think you're going to see a tremendous renaissance in downtown living,” said the city’s economic development director. “I think this is just the beginning."
