Just your run-of-the-mill single-family high-rise

Nothing to see here, folks…just a $1 billion, private high-rise residence in Mumbai, India. That’s all. The 27-story skyscraper, named Antilia (after the mythical Island in the Atlantic Ocean) is the new home of 53-year-old businessman Mukesh Ambani, his wife and three children. (And 600 full-time staff!) The 398,000-sf building is considered the world’s largest residence. Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, is the world’s 4th richest person, with a personal wealth approaching $30 billion.

Designed by Chicago-based Perkins+Will, the high-rise was inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, with open green space inserted between many floors that includes hanging gardens and ceilings tall enough to accommodate trees.

Even with all that open space, the “house” manages to squeeze in a few niceties, including:

  • 50-seat movie theater
  • Several swimming pools (yes, several)
  • Fitness center and spa
  • Dance studio
  • Six-story, 160-car garage
  • Three helipads

What do you think the resale value is on a property like this?

* I’ll refrain from editorializing on how this billion-dollar property is located in a country with such incredible poverty.
