Lab exhaust ductwork cuts footprint in Berkeley energy research facility

General contractor Rudolph and Sletten, design engineer Gaynor Inc., and architect SmithGroupJJR faced tight space restrictions for the MEP systems of the University of California, Berkeley’s Helios Energy Research Facility. The 113,000-sf lab will house the Energy Biosciences Institute and the university’s bioengineering department. Instead of going with horizontal shaft-wall construction, consultant Critchfield Mechanical Inc., San Jose, Calif., recommended Flamebar-brand BW11 lab exhaust ductwork system, which cut the assembly’s footprint by more than a foot horizontally and vertically. The lab exhaust system is compliant with the IMC and UMC codes and approved by three UC campuses: Berkeley, San Francisco, and Irvine. Pacific Firespray applied the coating for 5,000 sf of fire-rated ductwork.
