Rehab center in San Antonio to help veterans cope with traumatic injuries

Jan. 4, 2012

Marmon Mok Architecture and SmithGroup designed the new 84,000-sf Department of Veterans Affairs Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio. The building will serve troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with multiple traumatic injuries. The project includes a 32,000-sf renovation of the existing hospital. The three-story rehabilitation center is enclosed by a courtyard and includes administrative and clinic spaces. Patient rooms are designed with separate storage for personal items, space for scooters, blackout shades on the windows, and a motorized lift for assisted bathroom access. A soft color palette and nature-inspired theme helps promote a relaxed environment for patient recovery.
