University of Idaho athletic center receives life-safety upgrades

Dec. 9, 2011

The Kibbie Athletic Center at the University of Idaho, Moscow, has undergone electrical, life-safety, audio/video, and lighting upgrades as part of a $30.3 million renovation program sponsored by Associated Students of the University of Idaho. Designed by MW Consulting Engineers of Spokane, Wash., and Opsis Architecture of Portland, Ore., the 180,000-sf center has been brought up to contemporary performance and technical standards, with a seating capacity of 16,000 and a ceiling that reaches 160 feet high. Upgrades include an enhanced fire alarm system, new egress and exit lighting, an engineered smoke-control system, a new emergency-generator system, and life-safety integrations. Premium-seating enhancements were made possible by relocating a 3,000-sf press box from the south concourse to the north.
