Designs for a new enclosure to house nuclear scanning technology developed by Decision Sciences Intl. Corp. is under way in Poway, Calif. Scanning technology is used to accurately detect nuclear and radiological threat materials transported in shipping containers. The 3,1000-sf facility will contain enclosed and insulated scanners, while the Building Team plans to adapt the structure for specific sites around the world.
The team is led by KMA Architecture & Engineering in collaboration with Burkett & Wong (structural engineer), Abbott Engineering (mechanical engineer), Lopez Engineering (electrical engineer), and Yagade Consulting. Since detection equipment is highly sensitive, the team has had to deal with space restraints, air circulation, water tables, and climate concerns.
