A solid-faceted crystal salt shed with a glowing sidewalk moat is one of 11 projects to receive awards from the City of New York’s Public Design Commission. Created by New York-based firms Dattner Architects and WXY Architeture + Urban Design, the Spring Street Salt Shed was designed for the city’s Department of Sanitation and will house a stockpile of rock salt for use on winter roads.
The sculpted-form structure reflects the triangular shape of the site, and a tapered base allows for more street-level space for pedestrians. Straying from conventionality, the shed’s crystal faÁade complements the neighboring art deco Holland Tunnel Vent Shaft and counterpoints the scrimlike Manhattan 1/2/5 Garage to the north.
