Sam Houston State arts programs expand into new performance center

Dec. 17, 2010

Theater, music, and dance programs at Sam Houston State University have a new venue in the 101,945-sf, $38.5 million James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center. WHR Architects, Houston, designed the new center to connect two existing buildings at the Huntsville, Texas, campus. Bronze panels, Sam Houston blend brick, burnished block, and cast stone fit the new structure into the campus design vocabulary, while sloped roofs make the new building stand out. An 878-seat concert hall, 182-seat recital hall, and 160-seat dance theater, not to mention dance and theater studios, a classroom, costume and scenery shops, a body conditioning room, and offices, round out the space.
