Omniplan, in association with Jerde Partnership, created an updated design for Santa Monica Place, a shopping mall designed by Frank Gehry in 1980. The $265 million redevelopment of the 750,000-sf mall (500,000 sf of leasable retail space) reflects its surrounding neighborhood, complete with beach features, ocean views, and eclectic façades. The three-story retail and dining complex, which popped its top and is now an open-air pavilion, opened in August with a 74% occupancy rate. The mall also reduced its footprint by 20,000 sf and recycled 92% of its construction debris. The project is targeting LEED certification.
