The first industrial project to earn LEED Gold certification from the Canadian Green Building Council was recently completed on a reclaimed eight-acre site in Hamilton, Ont. The Steelcare steel coil warehouse was built to be exceptionally strong, too, because of the load imposed by three 45-ton cranes used to handle the huge steel coils it stores.
To hold that load and still provide solar lighting and energy attributes required for LEED certification, general contractor Abbott Construction of Brantford, Ont., used a Butler CMR-24 standing-seam metal roof system and Centria pre-insulated metal wall panels. This approach allowed Abbott to build strong, sturdy walls and roof, yet still allow modular openings for solar panels, skylights, and other sustainability measures.
