Harlem facility combines social services with retail, office space

Harlem facility combines social services with retail, office space

Harlem is one of the first neighborhoods in New York City to combine retail with assisted living. The six-story, 50,000-sf building provides assisted living for residents with disabilities and a nonprofit group offering services to minority groups, plus retail and office space. Manhattan-based Michielli + Wyetzner Architects broke up the building’s mass by visually dividing it with different shades of brick and recessed windows on the third floor. The sixth floor is set back to make the building less imposing from the street; the setback also allows space for a green roof.
