Handy security system

Handy security system

By Staff | August 11, 2010

At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the safety of U.S. men's and women's basketball teams at a resort away from the Olympic Village was ensured with an access-control system with photo badging and biometric hand-geometry readers. The athletes and their guests' hands were scanned ahead of time, recording the three-dimensional digital map of the hand and transferring the data into the reader. Guests and athletes entering the secured areas of the resort were asked to swipe their access-control cards and then scan their hands on the reader for access. If the hand image matched the prescanned image, a green light was given to allow access.
