Government shutdown closes E-Verify, could hamper construction hiring

E-Verify, the online federal program used to check the immigration status of prospective hires, has been closed due to the federal government shutdown. Because the system must be used in some states, this could hamper hiring, with the construction industry among those at risk. “Depending on how long the government is closed, construction workers are likely to miss out on new job opportunities,” says Stephen Sandherr, CEO of The Associated General Contractors of America.
