British architecture practice Foster + Partners has been chosen to design what will be 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar’s centerpiece stadium, the Lusail Stadium.

According to ArchDaily, the firm beat out other big name architects in the competition, including David Chipperfield, Mossessian & Partners, and Mangera Yvars Architects.

Norman Foster described the design as “an exciting step forward in stadium design—it will be the first to break the mold of the free-standing suburban concept, and instead anticipates the grid of this future city.”

The winning design was first proposed in 2010 with the help of Arup and Populous.

The stadium’s site is in Lusail City, nine miles north of the capital city, Doha. The 80,000-seat stadium will host the 2022 World Cup’s opening ceremony and final match.

Among its features are an open air pitch that can be cooled to 78 F.
