The long-vacant Sears Roebuck building in Portland, Maine, was redeveloped into the corporate headquarters for MaineHealth. Consigli Construction and local firm Harriman Architects + Engineers handled the 14-month fast-track project, transforming the 89,000-sf, four-story facility for just $100/sf.
The team preserved and restored as much of the buildingās original 1940s architecture as possible, including the original terrazzo floors and masonry exterior. The interior was very dark, so the central core was gutted to create an atrium that filters daylight throughout the office, which has space for up to 350 employees, a state-of-the-art conference center and meeting rooms, catering kitchen, and employee health/exercise facility.
