Former Bronx railyard redeveloped as shared education campus

Former Bronx railyard redeveloped as shared education campus

May 18, 2011

Four schools find strength in numbers at the new 2,310-student Mott Haven Campus in New York City. The schools—three high schools and a K-4 elementary school—coexist on the 6.5-acre South Bronx campus, which was once a railyard.

Each school has its own entrance, administration offices, and classrooms and an individual color scheme to differentiate itself, but all four share common facilities such as gymnasiums, a football field, and a 600-seat auditorium. Some shared spaces, like the plaza and street-level meeting rooms, are available for use by the public. The Building Team for the $137 million, 292,000-sf project includes architects Perkins Eastman and Alexander Gorman Architects, contractor DeMatteis, and engineers WSP Flack+Kurtz and LERA.
