The Environmental Protection Agency continues to develop new stormwater regulations that are expected to force project developers to write stormwater considerations into designs.
The reason: it's easier and cheaper to manage stormwater by decreasing a building's footprint or designing landscapes to soak up water than it is to add devices after the building is in place.
Some developers may have to install things like pollution-reducing green roofs or stormwater-retention basins. The rulemaking process, begun in 2010, appears to have been delayed for political reasons, but may move forward after a new EPA chief is installed.
