Sure, the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers have plenty of history at Rexall Place. Home of the Oilers since 1974, the venue has seen five Stanley Cup-winning teams and many all-time greats take the ice.
While the aura might be lost, Rogers Place, set to open in 2016, will blow Rexall Place away when it comes to technology. The new LEED Silver-certified arena will have the league’s largest high-definition center ice scoreboard, along with full high-speed WiFi, video walls, and more than 1,200 screens throughout the arena.
Rogers Place made the list of Curbed’s 11 next-generation stadiums in North America. Also on the list are new stadiums and arenas for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings; the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings; the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings; MLB’s Atlanta Braves; and MLS’s Orlando City.
Curbed also profiled a new Mexico City baseball ballpark and a Las Vegas arena that will be a tool used to attract a wayward NHL team, or perhaps an expansion franchise.
