In 2010 Columbia University was awarded an ARRA National Science Foundation grant to upgrade portions of the 1966, two-story 22,500 sf Core Lab Facility on the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory campus in Palisades, NY.
Construction manager Sordoni Construction Co. along with the design team of Payette Architects and Vanderweil Engineers will provide design and construction services to renovate the majority of the existing Core Lab building to create the new Lamont Center for Bio-Geochemistry.
The space will be predominately lab research space consisting of fume hoods, lab benches, growth chambers, environmental rooms and various other specialized equipment and services. In addition, the first floor will be partially upgraded for mechanical support space and for future laboratories.
Part of the LEED construction will be a proposed “green roof area” consisting of conversion of an existing roof into a promenade linking to adjacent researcher offices with a park-like area containing shallow succulent plantings.
Construction is scheduled to start in early 2012. BD+C
