Tacoma Convention Center

Tacoma, Wash.

As the schematic design of the convention center is finalized, Michael Johncock, project manager with design architect MulvannyG2, Bellevue, Wash., says the design team is now able to focus on, among other things, the proposed 400-ft.-tall tower. It is not included in the project budget.

"We are now starting to gear up and look at the structural aspects of the tower, as well as to see how much it's going to cost," he says. "Also, the city is starting to talk to outside sources regarding funding for it." The city is considering selling the naming rights to the tower, or to lease space at the top for use by a radio station or telecommunications company.

Union Pacific Center

Omaha, Neb.

Design development of this 19-story, $260 million headquarters for Union Pacific Corp. is under way. One of the issues the design team is dealing with is enhanced security design following the Sept. 11 attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon, says William Hartman, project manager with design architect Gensler of San Francisco. Union Pacific Center will be the focus of "Project Chronicles" next month. BDC
