A bill that passed the California legislature would limit where distribution centers can be located and impose other rules aimed at reducing air pollution and traffic.

Assembly Bill 98 would tighten building standards for new warehouses and ban heavy diesel truck traffic next to sensitive sites including homes, schools, parks and nursing homes. It would also require local governments to modify truck routes to avoid residential streets.

The bill would add minimum distance requirements between homes and warehouses and require buffers featuring walls and landscaping. The measure would also mandate replacement of two new homes for every one that’s demolished to enable construction of new distribution facilities.

Some local government groups oppose the legislation, and business groups say it could threaten trade and jobs. Gov. Gavin Newsom has until the end of September to sign or veto the bill.
