BIM Council seeks public comments on BIM Standard-US Version 4

The Building Information Management (BIM) Council is seeking public comment on an updated national BIM standard.

NBIMS-US V4 has been three years in the making and is scheduled to be released this fall.

“The NBIMS-US consensus process includes both public comment and member voting,” said AC Powell, JD, CPS, president and CEO of NIBS. “NBIMS-US V4 is a consensus-based standard, and we need, want, and welcome industry input.”

The Building Information Management (BIM) Council, formerly known as the buildingSMART alliance, is directed by the National Institute of Building Sciences, and includes industry partners and BIM experts.

The committee working on development of NBIMS-US version 4 has been focused on:

  • Converting the standard, which is currently in PDF form, to online delivery
  • Creating a clear distinction between standards and guidelines
  • Creating the ability to reference individual sections in contracts
  • Updating modules independently and more frequently

The future design of NBIMS-US is envisioned to be a library of standards and guidelines managed and published as modules. Workgroups will manage and develop modules that correspond to contractable standards as well as guidelines for use in practice.

The comment period and public review opens June 8, and is scheduled to run through July 6.
