Reed Business Information and monthly industry stalwart Building Design & Construction have ended their six-month search for a new editor-in-chief. This month, the newly redesigned BD&C hired award-winning journalist Rob McManamy to take the helm of both its print and electronic editorial efforts in Oak Brook, Ill., a Chicago suburb. He reports to Associate Publisher Rob Goulding.
Based in Chicago, McManamy, 39, comes to Cahners from The McGraw-Hill Companies, where he worked for nearly 15 years, the last four as 
editor-in-chief of the bimonthly magazine Design-Build. Prior to that assignment, he was Midwest bureau chief for the weekly Engineering News-Record . In that capacity, McManamy covered a string of compelling industry events, from the Great Chicago Flood in 1992, to the Mississippi River's 'Flood of the Century' in 1993, California's Northridge Earthquake in 1994 and the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.
In late 1997, he was promoted to become the first-ever chief editor of the new start-up publication, Design-Build, the official magazine of the Design-Build Institute of America. Despite that designation, however, the journal remained an independent editorial arm of McGraw-Hill's Construction Information Group. At Design-Build , McManamy oversaw all editorial efforts and art design, exclusively covering the growing industry trend of single-source project delivery. This fall, that subject matter included the renovation of the Pentagon and the use of design-build to help repair the wide area damaged by Sept. 11's terrorist attacks. Design-Build's coverage of that event merited a nomination by American Business Media for one of its coveted Neal Awards, to be announced next month in New York.
Married and the father of two young children, McManamy lives in the Chicago south suburbs. A graduate of the University of Virginia and the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, the Bronx, N.Y., native is a member of the American Bar Association.
