Massive LAX rehab to feature 18 gates for super-sized planes

A $1.5 billion makeover and expansion of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport features the addition of 18 new gates, with nine able to accommodate the next generation of super-sized jetliners such as the double-decker Airbus A380. A $1.5 billion makeover and expansion of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport features the addition of 18 new gates, with nine able to accommodate the next generation of super-sized jetliners such as the double-decker Airbus A380. The addition of the larger gates was critical for LAX to accommodate the needs of several international airlines. http://www.contracostatimes.com/california/ci_17863166?nclick_check=1 LAX had initially planned to direct Airbus A380s to remote gates that would have required passengers to catch a shuttle to the terminal. Qantas Airlines officials made it clear that they were considering moving their A380 flights to San Francisco unless LAX officials constructed terminal gates to serve the aircraft, which can seat as many as 850 passengers. The renovated International Terminal will double in size to 2.1 million square feet. The main concourse will be demolished to make way for two new concourses on the north and south sides of the building. Other modernization projects under way at LAX include renovations of Terminals 4, 5, and 6 and the construction of a new utility plant.
